guys, i'm in need of a speedy reply on this one...i took blue in for tune/check up 'cause she was having issues with starting, staying running while shifting into gear, and losing power.  most of the problems have been easily fixed BUT, her airflow meter is toast and the mechanic is unable to find a replacement ANYWHERE on the market.  do any of you brilliant bus gurus have help/suggestions for me, or do i just need to take out the fuel injection stuff and go to carburetor???

Blue's stats:  '83 aircooled, fuel injection, automatic, westfalia

 Thank You

well, i still appreciate the response recycle!  good wishes always well received!  i was told they make a kit to switch f.i. to carb. and that it would cost about $675 installed-does that sound about right?

Can't speak to the quality, but it is there.  Call to order if you do though, BD is slow via web ordering.  And you can talk to them about the quality and any possible warranty.

Im not really sure but on my bus you could go into the afm and bend a metal piece away from the copper piece and the fuel pump would just run all the time. I have a 79 2000cc FI... Yes the fuel injection sucks sometimes but I like it. Good luck...TOG

Typically you can clean and adjust the AFM and make it work again. I believe that Bentley has the testing/adjusting procedures for the AFM. Don't give up on the FI quite yet, the dignifant system is a really reliable unit and improves mpg over carb setup.

Just thought I'd inform you this is an inherently unsafe way to run your engine. The fuel pump shuts down on low airflow so that when your engine dies, it stops supplying fuel. As it is, if you broke a fuel line, your engine would stop running but your fuel pump would not, you would pump fuel into your engine compartment, your ignition is on so you have high voltage, so WHEN (not so much IF at this point) the gasoline catches fire your fuel pump will continue to pour fuel into the flames and your bus will go up in a cloud of smoke and flames.

Just a warning.

GOOD WARNING ...do not bend the fuel cut off. this works in an emergancy but should be readjusted to the OEM specs. tell your mech to try A-CARDON. they most of the time have them rebuilt or they will rebuild yours. I will post another place tomorrow as the name and number is at the shop.try to avoid carbs if you can ...and check your smog laws as some states don't let you modify the emissions system on 1983 or newer vehicles. good luck...vwbr Smoker
