Hi, I am new to this forum and am glad I found it.  I am not new to VW buses, I have owned 5 and currently have three.  My question is; I have brought a '76 bus back to life after being dormant for many years.  This bus has fuel injection which I know very little about.  My bus will start and run but will not idle down.  It stays in the hyper idle all the time.  The 1600 was easy to tinker with but I could use some direction with this newer engine.  Thanks

 Welcome to LMB bkautzman,
Have you checked your vacuum hose connections and throttle valve positioner yet?

Is the AFM hooked up?

I had this problem on a '77 I was working on for a friend.  AFM hooked up=nothing.   AFM unhooked=3000rpm idle.

Turned out to be the brake booster hose.  It had come off, hidden by the Cold Start valve connection.  What was happening was, with the AFM disconnected, it was getting "Full load" (wide open throttle) signal to the FI, and using the big vacuum leak as the "intake."  Boom a very rich 3000prm.

Check all vacuum connections carefully, twice.  Then start testing electrical things per the manual.

Thanks for the Welcome, it is much appreciated.  I looked at my brake booster hose and it appears to be connected and still sturdy. I am replacing hoses one by one, they are pretty old. Could my aux air reg or decel valve be bad?

They could be.  Definitely sounds like a vacuum leak.  I'm can't remember how to check 'em off the top of my head, but I'll look into it for ya.

Does it backfire when it is doing this?

The thing about FI is that the fuel and intake systems are almost entirely separate, so you have to think: How is it getting air, and why is it getting fuel.

Simple things first:

New condenser and points, precisely gapped, or good electronic points replacement?  FI really likes a clean dwell, it is what times the injector pulses.
Valves and rings?  Gonna need a nice, clean vacuum signal (once all the holes are plugged) to control everything, so be sure that .006 is perfect, and compression is good.
Timing?  What kind of distributor is on there?  Is the vac pot functioning?  Got a steady Spark?
Did you double check all the connections on the harness?  AFM? the resistors and double relay? head temp sensor?

Also, got some pics of the engine?

Been pretty busy with the holidays and all.  I will do like you said and run it all down.  I have all the books and manuals to draw wisdom from on my journey.  I will keep you posted and will posts pictures as they come available.  I sure enjoy being behind the wheel of a bus again. Thanks again.  Thank You  Happy motoring.  109

Sometimes  temp  sensor  #2  loosens  up  or  goes  bad.  It  is  located  near  #3  cyl.  Make   sure  all  wiring  is  snug  and  clean,  especialy  grounds.  p14

I'll look into that....thanks.  Nothing like bringing to life an old bus.  I love the smell of gas/grease in the morning.
