News:

In December 1962, Heat "exchangers" were introduced. Air was heated for use in the cabin by passing air over heated compartments instead of directly passing air that has cooled the engine into the passenger compartment.

We all need theese right! So, how the heck do you put new ones in? I only have John's book and the Haynes manual. But for the life of me I could not see any reference as how to install a new engine compartment seal. Though it's a very manditory thing.
After three hours of trying everything I could think of to shove this rubber seal down the tracks the old seal came out of, I just gave up and took a pair of pliers and bent the outside track up untill I could feed everything in. And crimped  things back down. That's my take on this. ? Anyone how it should be done?

Well I didnt have to bend any of the track, however I did lube up the track and the seal itself and slide it in, It was not easy, but it did slide in. Perhaps the seal you got was larger aftermarket? or? Honestly not sure about mine, I think it was OEM but I could be wrong.

with a good engine seal you shouldn't need to bend any metal. it should be fairly soft (and the right size). All you need to do it poke it shiney side down and continue round. are you sure it's the right size seal?

I could be wrong here, but I think I read that Type 1 seals are quite different from their Type 4 brethren.

For a 68 bus the seal should be cut in threes, one for each side and one for the back . prying open of the tab is normal.vwbr Smoker

Thanks guys. I do believe the seals I got are aftermarket. I got them from Bus Depot. I don't understand the "shiney side down" thing though.
Also the seals were kind of stiff and lube of any kind still didn't let me slide them in more than 8" or so. Anyway, I did get them in and everything is cool Smiley oly

Hey oly, the shinny side down has to do with the Type 4 engine, since you have a Type 1 engine you don't need to worry about it. I am glad to hear that you finally got through it though.  eusa_dance

Out of curiosity, are the engine compartment seals split? under/over the sheet metal kind of thing? the ones I replaced were gone to the point of you could see  the pavement around the engine.

Most are split, so one piece can go on top of the tin and one under the tin.  Geri Lou has a beefy one-piece seal made out of softer, thicker rubber.  I like it a lot better, but I've only seen them @ Donsco, which is a little hole-in-the-wall VW shop in Belmont, CA.

I  have  had  good  luck   with  the  early  seals.  Once  the  old  one   is  out,  carefuly  straiten  and  clean  any  crud   out  of  track.  Warm   seal   in  the  house  or  sun  so  its  pliable.  Lube  with  warm  soapy  water  or  WD40.   I  just  keep  at it till  its  done.  Then  dimple  track  here  and  there  to  keep  it  snug.  Our  74  bug  has  a  one  piece  seal  which  is   O.E.M   for  that  year,  It  seems  it   would  fit   an  early  bus  too  if  cut  into  3  pieces.
