have any of you guys cleaned your engine tin before? Im clueless, i don't know if i should try using cleaner or just grind at it to make it nice and shiny again. The tins not really to rusty that i could tell, just caked with oil. i wanna do my heater boxes too - there in good condition but there starting to turn to the darkside i'm super new at this stuff so i was wondering if its legit to use a wire brush with a cordless drill to clean up the rust on the heater boxes. and the painting part..high temp paint or something? have any of you guys done this before? gsl

Were it me , I would pull my tin out and get some "GUNK" . Preferably in a quart size can applicable with a brush . Providing one can still find it that way where you are . Or if you are willing to spend a few bucks take and have it sand blasted and powdercoated . Just my 2ยข worth as usual . Best regards, ~W

If you are just wanting it cleaned up then get some degreaser, soak it down and then hose it off. Make certain that the spark plugs are wrapped up in tin foil and the carbs are covered up as well. You don't want water to get in them.

If the tin is chunky with crud, scrape it first with a putty knife before you waste time and cleaner on it. If the tin is installed do what gosta said. If its off clean it real good and sand it, use coarse on the rust and fine on the painted surface. You don't have to make the rust shiny just has to be clean and oil free. Use a can of brake cleaner to clean and wipe down all areas to be painted. Then spray primer it, and paint with your choice of spray paint, or my preference brush on Rustoleum.

cool thanks guys, Most of the tin is already off. I took the heater boxes off too before i removed the engine. the heater boxes and the muffler were bought in 2003 according to the reciepts so there in pretty good shape. What do you guys in winterly climates do to preserve your heater boxes? Like i said mine are nice and healthy right now but there just gonna get worse and worse until i need new ones. im thinking about sanding and painting them every few years, will this prolong there life enough to make it worth it? Silly just got a whole bus for the price of what new heater boxes cost

You can get away with rustoleum paint on heaterboxes, least I do. Just clean 'em up the same way as tin and paint 'em. I like the brush on rustoleum when the tin is off because it is so much more durable than rattle can paint. Spill a little gas or oil on rattle can paint, it'll start lifting faster than brush on paint. Go to wipe up your spill and paint color comes up with the cleanup. The brush on is much more durable. When you need a touch up you don't have to sand and clean the whole thing you just wipe the area to be touched up with a degreaser and paint with a small brush.

Powdercoating is the way to go the ultimate durability. It does lighten the wallet though. We have a powdercoater in our club that gives the club good prices. He also does ceramic coating. That would be the thing for your heater boxes. Rustoleum does a good high heat paint as a second choice. Clean them up as good as you can.

I saw that Westy. I'd have to get rid of the paint- yuck! It's missing the fridge and stove too.

I think the guy just had a dream and got in way over his head. now he just wants it out of his misery. It's parked in front of the garage and he has no key, poor fool can't even push it out of the way. How hrd is it to change the switch or have a locksmith come out and rekey it. My guess is it's a kid with no support from his parents and they're just hasseling him "when you gettin that piece of crap out of the driveway". Lolli a solid foundation in the wrong color is better than the right color with a punky foundation. and the orange bus would make a good parts bus. You go over there with $500 and I'll bet you own it. That bus has been up for a while, price keeps coming down. Everybody is leery of it because of no title or keys. If I was in the market I'd at least look at it.

Heck the bus is worth $900 in parts alone, the right thing to do would be to offer him at least that. I wonder if you were to pay a lock smith, (60-150 ) if the darn bus would run. I mean, he obviously doesn't have a clue, I feel bad for the guy.

Kero works really well for cleaning pretty much anything on your engine, but if you really want to clean things use brake cleaner, I use it to get the Kero residue off. It'll get tiles off tiles but is a tad expensive.

thats bus is pretty exciting! But who buys a bus with a bad engine from Cali for 3k. That doesn't seem right. For that cash the engine should be fine.
I lost my job before the holidays (its cool) , so i am broke right now, but i still emailed the guy anyway. why not right? Holyoke is really close. Maybe i can help him out if nothing else.
Im gonna work on ol' Orange today so i'll start a post about the frame. If the frame is fixable (which i believe it is) than i don't care so much. I plan to have this bus forever, so if i can make it solid - than its solid, regardless of what it looks like. I just won't be winning any VW shows or anything.
Im gonna work on the bus today so I'll take soem pictures of the frame and start a new post. I appreciate that you guys are looking out for me!
and thanks for the cleaning advice too!
