I've been reading a lot of fire stories on The Samba and have become irritated with this one:  There is TALK about the metal carb fitting popping off with the fuel line and spraying the engine...but then talk always goes back to replaceing your fuel lines.

I have a 30/31.  I yanked on the carb line and it seems so secure.  Could someone tell me more about this "problem".  What are the warning signs and what is the fix.

Betty's carb. works great but is OLD!  Quite old I would say.  So old that a new one has crossed my mind just as a preventitive measure.

Let me know your thoughts! ...and have a fun beer drinking (if you embibe) VW tinkering weekend

 Cheers !!!!!

Yes they can.  But if yours feels secure, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.  If it worries you, slather some JB weld on it.

Looks like a very sound idea.
I also have read a few things on the fire issue, and this seems like it would at least control the damage if it popped off.

It could happen. I've worked on carbs in which I've had to remove the fuel line. While removing the fuel line from the carb itself, I've had the fitting come off with the fuel hose. I haven't heard any "horror stories" about the fittings coming off while driving and causing fires though. However, I do like the idea presented in the link you provided. Shoot, it couldn't hurt!

I had one come out driving down the road   ...... Eek!.... right after putting the car together from a repaint........I was driving through the neighborhood and it just stalled...... so i got out to see the stream on the road behind me.................... eusa_pray......Man i was lucky with that one........the whole engine compartment was drenched....... Eek!

Since then........I preach making sure that is taken care of..................especially on older carbs.........  Thumbs Up! 1

HEY ALL!  I used steel wire to tie down the carb. fuel line clamp to the generator strap bolt.  It made me feel good.  I hope it's not a false sense of security.  The line really can't pop off with the wire securing it so...I guess it's better then nothing.

It's better than the alternative...

I'm starting to think I might better do this too!
