HI YOU ALL!  I was taking in the sights under Betty over the weekend and wondered:  How can you tell if a clutch/ accelerator cable is ready to break.  I think I know the answer...(you'll know when it breaks)...but I wondered how long these types of cables last.  Mine look original and I would rather not goof with them since they both work so well.

What are your thoughts/ cable stories  17

I know that many people carry a spare of both on their vw, especially when taking a long trip. In fact, just 3 days after I signed up for AIRS I gotta call from a beetle driver stranded near Milwaukee with a broken accelerator cable. The only way that I know to check if one is on the way out is to remove it from the boden (I think that the correct term 102) tube and inspect it.

I just fear messing with it and being unable to put it back with my skills (lack of skills).  I bought a new one from Bus Depot along with the bube that gets it through the fan shroud.  I may be wrong, but the cable is "solid" and I wonder if it is a good replacement.  It is not like the one on Betty now which is a woven cable (if that's the right term).

I think I brained my damage.

Woven would be less likely to break due to bending

Just keep 'em on ya as spares.  They should last for years if lubed and not catching on anything.  I haven't had to change one in either of my buses yet.

And, really, if you get bored, just pull one out and inspect it.  It's not hard, well, at least not complicated, to put it back in.  Gotta learn sooner or later.  So either learn now, or on the side of the road.  Either way'll teach ya.
