Hello everyone! I just found this page and it looks great. I am hoping you can help with something. I live in Northern New York and it gets very cold, but my bus will not even start at 40 deg F. The starter will turn and sometimes the engine will even start for about 5 sec then stop and not start again at all. When it is 50 deg out it will start with no trouble at all. I just want to be able to start it once in a while during the winter. Any ideas?

my guess would be something fuel related. but not knowing your individual setup it will be hard to say exactly. mine started this mornign after some turning over for 30 seconds or so. 8*F out.

Give us a more detailed description. Does your bus keep cranking and not start? A good way to start on a problem like this is with tuneup, then go from there. It just might fix it.

What kind of bus, year, engine etc. Is it fuel injected or is it carbed? Is it a single progressive or dual carbs? Webers, solexes or Kaldruns? We need to know all these thing to start with. to LMB.

I have a 1971 camper, but the engine is a 1600cc from a 1974 beetle. It has a Solex 34PICT-3 carburetor. The previous owner told me that he took out the choke plate because the air temp that it works from is not accurate (it will cool off much faster than the engine).
Then engine does continue to turn over when I keep turning the key, but it doesn't sound like it is trying too hard.

Are you used to driving modern FI cars? Old carburated cars are completely different. When cold you have to floor the gas pedal 2-3 times and hold about halfway down before you even turn the key. Once it catches you will prolly have to feather the gas pedal up and down a little to keep it running till it settles down. It's not like modern FI where you can just start and go. Best to let it warm up for a minute or two or longer before attempting to drive. If you are unfamiliar with how to drive an old carbed engine in the cold, don't try to leap out into traffic until the engine has warmed up. A carbed engine with no choke will fall flat on its face with sudden shots of acceleration when cold. You'll get used to it and learn how to feather the pedal after a while. these old VW's will communicate with you, if you listen to them. Pay attention to cause and effect when driving them.

to LMB you need to have the choke reinstalled and that should correct the problem. you might have to buy a used carb top as they do not sell the missing choke plate. good luck vwbr

I tried changing my foot work (I was just pumping it after I turned the key before), but it still did not start. I have not had a chance to put the choke plate back in. My wife and I just had our first baby 4 weeks ago and he has been keeping us busy!
