hey all.

We are planning on taking our van on a road trip this week and are wondering if anyone has tips on keeping the engine temperature down. our van has a habit of getting quite hot on even shorter drives in the city. small puff of smoke when you take the oil cap off, burning smells...

we have 20w50 for oil and have bought some of that LUKAS oil stabaliser stuff that we will add in. i have read on this site about vacuum advance distributors and will look into that, but wont be able to get one into the van before we head out on our trip...

also, what exactly do peple mean by the "tin"? and what role does it play in cooling the engine?  is this the sheet of metal that seperates the engine compartment from the bottom side of the vehicle?

any ideas on how long one should let the van rest if it starts overheating?

thanks! Nana

What condition is your engine seal in?  Replacing the seal is easy.

Check around your engine compartment and look to see if there are any routes for exhaust heat off the pipes or muffler to get up in the engine compartment.

Drive slow : )

Make certain your valves are set properly and that timing is correct. Then drive slow, down shift before you think you should and up shift later than you thank is right. Big hills use third and keep it below 50mph, anything below 45 should be taken in 3rd.

Good luck and have fun.

Yeah, Check your carb settings and timing.  Lean mixtures and over-advanced timings run hot.

Also check the tin under the engine, to do this, crawl underneath and make sure the sheetmetal is there, you don't just see cylinders and pushrod tubes.
