I have a 1971 Westy.  Is there any advantage to installing a aftermarket air cleaner or is the stock VW air cleaner as good as it gets?

Welcome to the LMB Forums . I have a '71 Deluxe and I've been happier since I did away with my oil bath air cleaner and replaced it with an after market off road one .
But , that's just me and I will probably catch some flak around here now ............................  Hi

So what makes you happier about it?  Is it more effective?  better looking?  or just easier to maintain?

I just got back from Boise's Bow Wow for fuel hose and the manager (owner?) tells me that clearance is a issue for starters but also that the stock VW air cleaner is just fine...that none on the market do it any better.

Any insight?

The only advantage I see to changing on a stock engine is the ease of changing.  But the Oil bath is a great system, and you don't have to replace anything but a little oil now and then.  One other thing about the paper ones is that I've heard (and it makes sense) that unless you put an extension piece on top of the carb, the air flow just behind the filter isn't sufficient to properly atomize the fuel spray in the carb.  This could, in theory, lead to poorer running.  But I've only used the stock cleaner, so I'm not entirely sure, could just be stock buff propaganda.

If there is a problem with the flow in the oilbath, it could probably use a good cleaning.  Probably hasn't been done in 30 years.  Take it apart, clean the bucket part with rags, and the filter part with solvent, fill with oil to the line, and put back in.

I agree with Dj:Eep the stock is best for clean air, and no...it's not urban legend about some of the aftermarket air filters. About 3 inches + for good air flow above the carb. vwbr Smoker
