Meet Bertha the coolest bus!!

« on: October 07, 2007, 04:12:57 PM »

So I had Bertha for a couple of weeks, went camping in her once, loved driving her, ran to the store. Bertha was running awesome, no problems.  Was in the store for about 15 minutes, came out and Bertha wouldn't start!!!  Just a click. Nothing else.  We tried to jump start her but nothing.  We towed her home and now I don't know what to do.  I thought maybe it was the battery but the lights work fine.  So anyone know what could be wrong with her??  She was running great and now she isn't running at all.  I miss driving her.  Please help.   eusa_pray

I would test the battery for voltage, however a load test is most accurate and would tell you if it is working properly, you could take it out and bring it up to the auto parts store they can run a load test for free...

Another thing I would do is hit the Starter with a hammer a few times and see if it helps, often times it will free up and start a few more times. A few solid wacks on the starter body. While your down there with the bus in neutral, e-brake on, you can jump the starter with a screw driver too and rule out some of the wiring before it.

Oh also the starter can be seen if you crawl under the passenger side just to the front of the rear tire. Look up and you will see a cylindrical looking thing with wires attached to it. Thats what you want to hit. Dont smash the wires. And be careful if you are tring to jump it down there. Or just hit a few times and try to start with key, hit a few times and try again.

Hope I am not about to jinx my self here , but since I installed the relay between the battery and the starter , I have not had any starter problems since .

I can recommend John Muir's book 'how to keep your aircooled VW alive' - it's got a trouble-shooting section at the back which is very thorough and easy to follow

Yeah that sounds like the starter. Here is what I did. You can turn the key to the on position then turn it on and off really fast. This is harder to say how to do on here than showing you. I also know that you have only one chance to turn the ignition on then you have to turn it all the way off then back to the on position. Well there is a way to turn it over more than one time and remember you have to do this really really fast for it to work. If you dont understand make that long distance call to me and I will tell you over the phone how to do it. I used to be a tow truck driver for 2 yrs and I always used this trick to start the cars that had starter problems.
