Will a Westy top work on a transporter bus? How hard is the conversion?

First Welcome to LMB.

I believe that the answer to your question is yes, a Westy top will fit onto a regular transporter but you will have to cut a lot of the roof out. If you wanted the benefits of a camper with out the extra space and weight of the top then I'd switch in a westy interior. This would give you a camper that will sleep 2 people without the potential of ruining the top of the bus. Or sell the transporter and buy a westy.

You might have to reinforce the top once it's been cut, a lot of the camper conversions had this done as the busses are monocoque and need the structural rigidity.

Welcome from me too Greenhorn, heck, havn't heard that term in a long time:) Anyway, I think there is more to it than cutting out a piece of the roof of a standard bus to accept the "Westy" top. Seems to me the pan needs to be reinforced at the least. Or something anyway. Seems that Westies were made from Pannels I think, because the body flexes to much due to all the window space....something like that. Do a bunch of research before you start cuttin!:) Oly

 Welcome

There is a book I have seen on Ebay and Amazon that is specifically written to do camper conversions to transporters.  I have not read it, but seems it would answer all your questions better than a guess.  Good luck as I have considered the same for my 75.

Your dreaming again aren't you? Don't do it you will just ruin your Bus. If you have to ask this question in such broad terms you don't have the skills to pull this off. Don't feel bad neither do I. LOL  Just put a camper interior in it. Take care of it mechanically and when you find a Westy you'll already own a parts bus.
