Found out that it has a 71/2 1600 dual port engine today. Plus I adjusted valves, they were all really tight. I haven't taken it out yet, will report back after class.

Adjusting valves made a huge difference, idles and starts easier now. Still have a bad low end stutter, but not as bad as it was. Next step is to check plugs and adjust points.

Remember the thread about 'ditching that 009'? Maybe the dizzy is something to check. When I put an SDVA unit on my bus (bus, bug, same 1600 in both yours and mine)... WHAT a difference. Not just 'ooo that's nice' either. It was one of those like 'DAMN son!' moments. Sure I'm pushing a lot more weight around but ya know. Details... Also, why is the right rear wheel so squat?

That's what I am thinking as well. Just gotta find one cheap enough.
I hadn't noticed that wheel before, I will have to check it out tomorrow,

Yeah, my 1600 DP just wasn't happy with the meager 15ish degrees of advance the stock double vacuum dizzy gave. It was like a whole different engine once I saw that timing notch shoot to around 30 degrees at speed. Take a timing light to her tomorrow and let us know what you have... ;)

I bumped Dashwood up to 30 degrees and he starts easier and idles better. I have found that if I let off the clutch slowly, I mean really ride it, I can take off without the coughing and sputtering. The problem is worse when it is cold but does rear its ugly head from time to time when its warm. wow Gosta, i am jealous! i too have a soft spot for the bugs, and still pass that dang sweet orange one i talked myself out of buying! i like it! man am i behind in all the groovy news! cool on the new member of your family! hope the bus isn't too jealous! I think I got a pretty good deal on this little fixer upper. I like the gas mileage and its much easier to pull in and out of spaces. Besides its just plain fun to drive.

Hey Sis! Haven't seen you or Mello in a while! How've you been? Anyway, Gosta, what is Dashy timed at at idle? Mine's a comfy 7.5 BTDC if that helps any. I tried everything from 5 ATDC to 10 BTDC and this seemed to be the best compromise.

I haven't checked at idle but full advance is set at 30, as per the local mechs advice. Starts really nice now.
