With gas prices and parking situations on campus the way they are I am considering buying this bug...

http://madison.craigslist.org/cto/882481488.html

The price doesn't look bad and I can park it in a parking ramp on campus. 41

My thoughts exactly. With Hazel in daycare my wife can only take off early twice week to pick her up. Therefore I need a vehicle that I can park on campus. Unfortunately, we do not have any ramps that can accommodate an 8 foot tall bus p1

I think this little bug would do the trick. I am only worried about it starting in the cold mornings and being warm enough inside.

Our    bus    doesn't   fit    in   most   garages   because   of   the   rack.   I    really   like    our    74   bug  for   errands,    etc.    I     work    most    in   downtown   or   nearby.   A    bug    is   easy   to    park    and   drive    in   a    conjested     area.    The   heat    and    starting    are   fine   in    Seattle.   I    have   had   no    trouble    during   cold   snaps,    but   I    don't   know   about     constant   cold.   The   worst  is   that   windows   fog   fast   on    our    chilly,   rainy   days.   Look    for    rust   in   the   "rocker    panels"    as   they   are   the   heater   channels.   They    require   some   complex     welding   to    fix.   Good   luck.    p14

VW's don't mind the cold, just try to find one with the cooling flaps intact.  And bugs have good heat if the seals and heater channels are intact.  Problem is, most aren't.

Geri Lou's flap-less type1 has always started for me in temps down to about -15.  Had to hold down the clutch for the first minute or so to let the engine wake up before trying to turn the glop in the transmission though.  Use a quality battery and run a thin oil, I've heard tales of using ATF, but I'm not vouching for it, as I haven't tried it.

Well I brought Willoughby's friend Dashwood home. He did well on the ride, heat worked great: 60F out so hot I had to role the window down. It needs some help, runs like crap when it's cold, idles rough back fires under load and has dead spots in the acceleration. But I got it for 900 and it made it all the way home on a 2 hour trip. eusa_clap

Dash lights don't work, left turn signal only works occasionally. I have some work to do, but the engine doesn't smoke at all, pans are in descent shape only one through hole, only surface rust on the body, and it cruises nice on the highway. The engine has 5000 miles on a rebuild, new tires, new generator, new voltage regulator, and new battery. He threw in Muir's book as well. I think most of the running issues can be dealt with by replacing the cheap ignition parts and a proper tune (he hasn't adjusted valves since the engine was rebuilt s13 ). I will be looking more into it in the coming weeks, wish me luck.

Congratulations.    Make   sure    the   warm    air    to    the    carb    is   connected.   A   lot   of   these   are    gone.   Makes    a     BIG     difference   on    a    cold   engine.   Good   luck!

It is connected. The carb is a Kafer, I know nothing about them. It has to be fully warmed up before it will not bog down and stutter on take off.

Some of that sounds like the heads need to be torqued, which means pulling the engine to do it right.  I'd do that before adjusting the valves, as it'll change their clearance anyway.  I'd also check for an intake leak of some sort.  The carb cleaner test works well.

I plan on doing an either test soon.

Here are some crappy pics. Our 1.5 year old digi camera broke so this is from a disposable.

Fixed the turn signal issue today, it was just a loose flasher.
