I guess my ex and I were able to get something right! My daughter is the graduating class valedictorian. She set her mind to be the valedictorian last year when she suddenly found out she was #2 in her junior class, funny thing is she wasn't even competing or anything. She had no clue how friggen smart she really was, even with her mother and I telling her. I never pushed her, didn't have to. She'd get upset if she was borderline between the Honor roll and the High honor role. She always loaded her schedule with AP (advanced placement) classes. I always told her that her best was good enough for me and an occasional B or C wasn't gonna be the end of the world. She's going to Manhattan college with a scholarship this fall. My little girl is going to be living in NYC! . Gawd they grow up fast. Bill

I have 2 girls at school now.....My oldest just graduated college last month and my youngest just finished her 2nd year of a 6 year double major............. My youngest does everything for the grade........ extra credit when she doesn't need it... she's taking summer classes to get ahead..... and maintains straight 'A's" in all here classes......... we try and get her to take a break now and then but she wont....... I just wish they weren't so far away........... We're definately proud of her..

That's great!! Every kid needs to have a "jump start" on life. Working that hard can only help when real life kicks in!!

The poor kid is torn between parents, She mentions and quotes me first, before her mother, as the most influential people in her life. She is concerned about how her mother will feel being second. The advice I gave her was 2 options, (I always give her at least 2 options, even as a toddler. Age appropriate options of course), change the order of our mentions in her speech, or be sure to seek out her mother first when the ceremony was over. Even if she sees me first, she should find her mother first. She and I were always closer than she and mom. I was the one that could get her to sleep, I was the one home at night (mom was a second shift RN) feeding and bathing and reading to from infancy through the kittle lid years. She was 6 when mom and I separated. I have joint physical custody, thank God, we plan our own time together and have since the seperation, mom was not allowed to say no, I was not allowed to be an idiot about it. It worked very well, I was nearly a daily dad and she did stay with me for the difficult freshman and part of the sophomore years, you know, dramatic 14-15 yo girls, hate their moms kinda years.
Here's the part that blows me away. The honor roll starts in the 6 grade in her school system, she was never not on the honor roll. When high honor roll started in high school she was terribly disappointed the one time she only made honor roll. I'm like, geeze kid give it a rest, a B+ is OK by me, see if ya can't get a couple more next semester. This is a kid that is already taking calculus, can read and speak Latin. I guess Latin is very useful in the sciences.
Who'd a thunk a maroon like me could have a hand in producing a kid like this.
We played classical music for her as an infant toddler. It was used to slow her down as an over wound child in the car or at bedtime. She still enjoys classical music. Maybe the reports about this effect of classical music and brain development are true?

It's even harder to raise a child right when you have a broken marriage. You deserve even more kudos ( as well as your daughter)
