I think it really depends on where you live, in Oregon here, I have bought three vhicles in the last few yers that have not had any titles, just a bill of sale.

here in Michigan the procedure is to go with seller and file for a lost title, $12 last time I did this...which was wayyyy back in the 1900's , I believe you can do a title search for a small fee by vin# online to see who the last titled owner was.

hmmm.. doesn't look good. seems you cannot obtain a title in anyway for a Titleless vehicle bought after 1990 in MA. ..but he has Plates on the thing and he menioned he drives frequently so who knows.

I know that a lot of the North Eastern states do not require a vehicle to be titled once it's reached 10 years of old. In Vermont you didn't have to have a title to sell a car, just a bill of sale.

Every state has their own laws, but in Kansas you can apply for a "quiet title". That usually requires a lawyer to petition a court to issue a new title on the vehicle. An ad or "posting" in the local paper for 2 weeks is also required. That is more expensive than the lawyer. All total about $750-1000. You can also get the VIN and call your local sheriff's office and have them run it to see if it's stolen. They might also be nice and tell you the PO info for free like my sheriff's office did

nice , i can jump threw hoops like the best of them. i'm heading to the dmv to get some answers. I believe MA is one of the toughest states with stuff like this. man, if this doesn't work out one of you guys from a more compliant state needs to buy this thing. its a white 71 westy , bodies solid, interiors complete, runs fine - $1700 what if i have a buddy in VT or New HAmpshire "buy it" , apply for title , blah blah blah , and sell it to me:) did i just cross the line?

Ummm if it's from Cali , DON'T BUY IT! The fact that the vin has been cut out conserns me, ALOT! I mean you could check out your local laws but i would hate to hear it's stolen and you loose you $$$ and the bus....Not even for a parts bus would I.....Good luck and there are tons of good buses out there...take your time!

you can apply for a new vin, but expect to spend loads of dough!! And it will be a bureaucratic nightmare.

maybe this is the universe telling you this is not your bus, and your bus is waiting for you to find him/her, maybe right around the corner
