hi every body! We just bought a 1974 bus and it died on the way home!( the oil light came on before I could stop it stopped dead (smoke out the back!) My wife was sad that she didn't get to drive it. I am about to drop the engine and stripping it all down for painting. I wanted to paint it my self but I am worried shot environental dangers! I have friends in the auto buisness and the said to use maaco. I'm going to be working on the engine and one less thing would speed up the downtime. Our family has started to give us a hardtime about the "money pit"

Sorry to hear that you didn't make it home. I have only painted one engine, a Chrysler 340, and I just used the engine paint available at any autoparts store. But that engine operated at nowhere near the temp range of the Type4.

Welcome! Sorry to hear about that! I guess this kind of stuff happens.....I got my bus just before Christmas ....was working 14 to 16 hour days and did not get a chance to drive it much....got off that production 3 weeks ago so I have had time to look it over and found out the King Pin was shot. A new production starts in 2 more weeks.....so I am trying to get the work done before that cause this is going to be a huge show......so back to the long hours again Lets see some pics regardless!!!!

! Not a money pit but a genuine piece of history, groovy culture, an investment in the past ! not a bad pitch Idea. But really it feels like it is something we can make work on our own terms, I belive my friend called it "gearheading"? we have a bunch here http://www.flickr.com/photos/nnefam/sets/72157604063930798/Hey maybe someone here could tell me about the body of the floor. There are clusters of "holes" in the body,Im guessing for pluming? the last owner was clueless. When I figure out how to put the pic up I will

I may be off here but I think the four holes on the vertical piece is for mounting the rear seat. The three large holes What I am most curious about is the flat sections of sheet metal on the vertical ribbed section. That should not be there.

Details? I have friends in the auto buisness and the said to use maaco. I'm going to be working on the engine and one less thing would speed up the downtime. Our family has started to give us a hardtime about the "money pit" Maaco is likely to do an OK paint job, but they are known for skimping on prep if you skimp on the price. Do as much of the prep as you can yourself, then bring it to them for spraying.

I would disagree on the Money Pit statement. A money pit is buying a new car that depreciates in value immediately never to regain the value you paid for it. A Classic of any kind especially an Icon like the bus goes up in value and always gives back to its owner in intangables. The cost to restore a bus is minimal too, Try restoring a '69 Dodge Charger Parts cost a lot and are hard to find but well worth it Have fun!
