 Hello, been lurking for a year now, but this is my first post. I'd like to hear from anyone who has used the Clinton Hull book "Plans and Instructions for Volkswagen Van Campers," or otherwise built their own interiors. I have a 71 Bay that I want to build up completely from scratch, including the stitching. Am I nuts? Thanks, Gene

 Are you planning to keep the origional design or do your own? I seen to always come back with a variation of a vanagon westy interior as I doodle....with some slight modifications..... There's a pic of my interior paneling at the bottom.

I like the Westy layout too. What are you doing for a bed? Rock and roll?

Yes, I kept the metal base - just ripped the old plywood off after I measured - and will be making my own cushions, and also I want to make it a 3 seater across with just a sliver of countertop along the driver's side.
The insulation is basically bubble wrap sandwiched between thin sheets of reflective aluminium - it comes in rolls at home depot.

Here's some outdated pics of the interior I'm putting in my Bus. It's a completely from scratch job too. Got some more done on the bus today, a little woodworking...first, a nice layer of Masterseries paint to protect the floor...

Then a Devon style overhead locker, and a side closet. Then the best part: a wet bar!
Nothing is finished yet, as you can see, it all needs to be trimmed out, but I'm beat.
I decided rather than build a full camper interior that I'll probably never spend any real time in, I'd make a more spacious hang out spot that I can sleep in if needed. I still need to put in the rear convertible bench and table, then it's carpet time...

This kind of stuff is wwaaaayyyyy more time consuming than one would think, and condusive to plenty of mental gymnastics. I'm in the middle of designing interior cabs too.

Agreed. Time spent noodling with the bus is good time.  Also agreed on the mental gymnastics, I've drawn (and scrapped more plans than I care to remember. Funny, the same buses that used to be places to burn brain cells are now places to sharpen them.  |
