News:

In December 1962, Heat "exchangers" were introduced. Air was heated for use in the cabin by passing air over heated compartments instead of directly passing air that has cooled the engine into the passenger compartment.

Long Live the Vw's...

« on: March 15, 2008, 06:22:58 AM »

Sorry if there's already a topic on this, but I didn't see one on a quick scan.

It's about the time of year when even us upper-miswesterners start cleaning up our buses and driving them again.
So, I did the tire pressures (including the spare, of course) wash, wax, took off the wheels to touch up the undercoating in the wheel wells.
Also cleaned the interior--particulary the dirty windows. Checked the oil and brake fluid, had a look at the fan belt and started using the Bus for commuting and running errands around town again.
I suppose I should give her a grease job, oil change and adjust the valves, but the driveway was still soaking wet from the remaining snow melting off, so I got lazy on that stuff.
I don't suppose the valves got out of adjustment just sitting there, but I know I should check them anyway. (They were good last fall.)

Anything else I should do?
Where is everyone else's hibernation status?
What did you all do to get ready for bussing season?   Smiley

CHANGE THOSE FUEL LINES, ALL OF THEM.

I like to throw a can of fuel system cleaner through them. Put it in the tank and drive, todays gas doesn't have a very good shelf life, even with a can of STA-BIL in it. By the end of winter, last years gas has started turning sour. Grease it in a church parking lot if your driveway is too wet. Should change the oil before you put her to sleep for the winter, used motor oil has combustion byproducts that harm the engine. It is a slow process that adds up over years.

That sounds like a good idea. I think I'll run some through before I top up.

Wish I lived in your climate. I've never liked the cold.

Today it was nice out so I did an oil change, cleaned the oil bath air cleaner, lubed everything with a hinge, and greased the front end.
It feels good to get out in the sun and do that stuff again.

...And, of course, went for a cruise!

That's sweet.
Our last ACVW shop closed a couple years ago. I like working on the Bus, generally, but sometimes I don't feel like it and wish I could take it in to a garage for some of the things.
Happy bussing!

You don't hafta if you don't wanna and don't hafta...or something like that.
Getting into VWs did, on the other had, teach me to do a lot of things on the daily drivers, too.
Before that, I took everything to a mechanic friend of mine. Now I don't have to bug him so often.

Hoping to get mine out of storage this weekend, if crazy NW Ohio weather will cooperate.   eusa_pray  Then oil change, Fuel cleaner, adjust valves, and possibly work on the brakes.
