Well today has been a pretty ugly day.. Just got a call from Rat and looks like my tranny needs a rebuild and new studs time serted in.  eusa_shifty The guy i bought it from told me it was a small fix.. HA 1000 bucks! He also told me it will pass smog. Well that didnt happen now did it.. NOPE!  eusa_wall So now i have to re build my tranny and get it to pass in a way im not proud of.. Yes.. Illegal. GRR Anyways. Just venting. I got off the phone with the PO and told him he is paying half or im getting my money back. That didnt go over well. ron luckly called him and told him how it is and it is illegal to sell a car in NV that wont pass smog so he better hope i dont take him to court. GO RON!!! YOUR MY HERO! So i hope this ass will man up.  102 Thanks for listening.. No one else will haha  58

Sucks dude. I'd say that he has two options: (1) give you your money back and you return the car, or (2) pay to have the car brought up to smog standards.

Unfortunately, I don't think you have any recourse with the transmission.

Ya i know..  Doh! Im trying to get him to pay half or buy a new one for me but there is only so much i can do. So ill probably have it done and just see what i can get out of him. He is completly against taking the car back (wonder why HA) but its also hard because i love the car so damn much haha so i might get what ever i can out of him and just suck it up haha  33

Well it happened... I was driving my car back from Ron and the engine sounds amazing! Well the tranny was still acting up but it was still cruising fine.. I got about a block from my house and there it went.. The trans separated it self from the diff. There was smoke everywhere and trans fluid everywhere.. I filled it back up and just put puted back home with smoke comming out the back.. I got it home and thats where it will rest.. Now i have to pull the motor and trans to get it down to a tranny shop.. will pulling this be really hard??  102 Thanks guys!  100

These are not exactly like your vw, but they will give you some pointers. Read through the posts and take what you need.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=61742&highlight=transmission+removal

It seems to me that you need to disconnect some wiring, the alternator, the coil, the starter. Then you need to disconnect the fuel lines and plug them. Next disconnect the C/V's and and shift cable, then prepare to drop the whole unit (engine and trans). Once everything is out and on the shop floor, separate the engine from the transmission. If you try to remove the transmission only then you run the risk of bending and breaking things.

Good luck and of course you have a Bentley on hand or on order.  Thumbs up! 3

That bloody sucks! Just know that we are all here to help, and feel for you!
The Bently book and Haynes manuals are both helpful to use together as there are hard-to-get bits in both.(and sometimes one is clearer on a subject than the other).

Thanks guys! Has anyone dropped it out? I feel pretty good about doing it but a little nervious with the fact of it just dropping out.. Would you say just put a floor jack unnder the middle (between engine and trans) and lowering it down slowly? Oh and no i dont have a bentley..  eusa_wall

Just read through the links, they give several suggestions on how to lower. Basically just a big jack.
I will do some more searching around and see if I can find out more for you.

quick question. (off topic) is it the 72? or 73 bus that comes with power disk brakes? The more and more i think about it I want a bus again  p11 I found a nice 78 or 79 FI and disk brakes. Full redone except interior (perfect) for 4000. Engine, trans, body, paint are Aok and the interior is not all there which is perfect as i love to fix up interior. Here is the link

from the pic it looks pretty good, but 4k for a transporter seems a little excessive. I bet he would take $3500.

'72 has power discs up front.

Back to the begining, can a 69 aircooled VW pass a smog test anywhere? I thought for the most part the t1 engine would be exempt because of it's age. Seems it's not a problem even in CA. I could be wrong though.

I asked him if he would take 3500 cash in person and he said. Thanks but ill take 4000 cash in person. haha whatever.  110
