One thing to always look for is if the bus has a good engine to body seal. If not and the person has been running the vehicle then it's a good bet that it has not been well taken care of. Not that it's a complete deal breaker but it's something to keep in mind.
Remember if it doesn't feel right or work out in a smooth way than it wasn't meant to be.

you just look at the engine, if you can see a gap between the engine tin and the body then they it's missing the engine seal.

ok i figured it out, they are all in my photo gallery on here... 65 photos the first once , is the white 1970 vw, the second a reciet said 74 yellow vw, but the registration says 71 green vw,so im not into the white one bt if its salvagable and the green one isnt ill maybe think about it... i want to hear a yes for the green on but its pretty beet up, i couldnt open the pop top on that one... way to damaged... then again its also missing the engine, its also an automatic.. so what do you guys/girls think... is it worth 1300 for both of them? if not but it is still a good deal how much should i offer?
edit.... all of my pictures are black... y is this???

Well the bodies don't seem in all that bad of shape, but you don't seem to have a complete car out of the two of them. There are some missing engine pieces on the white one, looks like they used ducktape or tin to cover the driverside part of the engine. You would have to find another nearly complete, running engine, or rebuild that one. You could expect another $200-$5000 depending on what you wanted out of the engine. Since they both seem to have been sitting a while expect a complete brake job~ $1000 or so. So with that said you're looking at spending between 2500-$4000 plus to get one of these vehicles back on the road. Not saying that you might get lucky and do it for cheaper but it would seem to me a more reasonable course of action would be to save up the $4000 or so and get a nice bus. Just my thoughts.

The white one isn't missing anything, it's been converted to a Type4 engine (shoddily). Probably the one out of that 74 automatic. I'd possibly buy it, just for sh!ts and giggles, but I wouldn't recommend it to you.

Well the proper tin is missing off the whole engine, not to mention the negative batter cable, the air cleaners, and the set-up for the carb linkage is strange, who knows if it works properly. There at least two bolts missing out of the fan shroud thing and the fan fence is missing. Now most of those are easy to replace, but if you can see all of that from a few pictures then it's a little scary to think about all the stuff you can't see. Let alone the botched conversion would be a major pain to set right.
