If it were solid (rust free more or less), mechanically sound, and complete, it's not a bad price at all. Be sure to look UNDER it from end to end and make sure the frame isn't rusted all to crap. Take a magnet around it and make sure it sticks, to check for bondo. Look at all of the brake lines, shocks, etc, etc and check to see if there's leaks. Does it run well? Try to be there when it starts for the first time in the morning, not after it's all warmed up. How does the clutch feel? Brakes? Accelerate okay? Noises like grinding or rumbling or whining or grating when you're driving?
If you've got the cash, I'd drop 50-100 bucks and have a local VW mechanic give it a once over.
I didn't heed any of my advice above, and love mine. Been driving it since the day I picked it up without problems (that I didn't create myself).
'68 is a good year. I'd snag it if it were clean and solid. The mechanicals are easy. Rust and bodywork is a bitch and is expensive.

check out prices of buses in your area on ebay ,thesamba & craigslist. If you feel it's solid offer him a little bit less. They are a labor of love and will always need work! Trust i have a 75,71,79 & 84! Just want to make sure the body doesn't have cancer aka really bad rust!
I bought my 75 passengar for $3500 and have had offers of 6k for it. Didn't do much to it.....They are worth every penny and if you maintain them they are great investments.... post them pic's

YEA! Post pics! My Betty was $2900. She has some rust but I covered much of it with POR-15...and she isn't allowed to play in the rain. 3K seems like a great deal...but heed THIS warning: It could also cost another 3K in parts if he/she is original. Brake stuff...tires...exhaust...engine goodies...it all adds up. Be sure to factor that in. My Betty NEEDED all that stuff. But her fresh paint and natural good looks made her worth it . She's such a drama queen! But never leaves me stranded...for TOO long . Oh yeah...POST PICS and ,

Hi, I went to check it out today. He took me on the test drive. Drove up to 65 mph. It runs great. The van has new tires, brakes, brake line, clutch, master cylinder, rebuilt motor with 18,000. I took picture of the van with my camera phone. I have no way of loading it up right now. Also have a video of the engine starting up. He said 3k obo.

I have a 1970 and the guy that had it before me thought he was building a race car or something? I've spent a lot of time and thankfully just a little money with some help from my fellow local club members fixing his hot rod dreams. It sound like a great bus though take some of everyone's advice here and don't be hasty. Have someone who knows VW's go through it. I hope this doesn't sound stupid, just want to help a future addict. Andy

dookiebrown, that sound really good! Offer him 2500 See if he bites.......That rust sounds not so bad, was it surface around the windshield or could you see holes? It really sounds like a great starter bus! Best of luck.....

Rastafoo is absolutely right. Chill in it quietly for a about 10 minutes. Close your eyes. You'll know if it's your bus or not.
Sounds like BS, but it's true.
