i might go check out a bus in jersey thats been sitting for the last 10 years or so.

do all the gaskets and rubber doohicky's and stuff usually dry up in these situations?

and are there other problems that occur from vehicles sitting around for a decade?

thanks guys,
 this place is the best

In a word, yes. My bus sat for about 7 years before I got her and the door and window seals took a beating. I'm in the process of doing the window scrapers and such right now. The drivers side (that got most of the sun) has deteriorated way more than the other side. All things said and done, plan on replacing all the door and window seals, some will need it right away and some you can wait for a bit. My experience is to replace the window scrapers and the door seals first. (Providing that the windshield seal is good.) That will help stop the spread of rust on the interior door (window) parts as well as the floor and lower body parts. And man, are some of these seals pricey! But what can you do ?
Well I filled in the gaps on the old seals with silicon (just the gaps mind you) and that has worked well for me so far.
Seals are one problem, opps, rubber dohickies:), but gaskets could or could not suffer the same fate. Carb gaskets and such, in that amount of time could fail also, and in my case they did! So figure on a carb rebuild too.
The fun part that I am now dealing with is the fact that you have to clean every electrical connection! Time takes it's tole on electrical connections! Think of them as the same as a battery terminal only in miniature. When they get crusty, they don't work!
And to top it all off, when a bus sits for so many years they end up smelling like crap, so you have to do a rigerous detailing thing!:) And I forgot to say... Welcome Smiley

Seals are nothing! Very easy (some) to do and oeveedub.com has the best prices on them..We just did some body work on ours and we are replacing all the window seals....Just make sure the bus doesn't have body cancer! You'll have a time fixing that ! Watch out around the windows, exspecially the front....now ours did have some around the slider and some windows but it wasn't really bad....we filled it with fiberglass and it has taken some love but they look great! Of course you'll probally have to jump the bus....do that there so if it does run you'll get a better idea if the engine and such...just remember these buses are a labor of love, we buy them to fix up and they all need work at some point of time...it's really what you want to put into it that matters...if the price is good go for it! We bought out camper for 800 bucks and it needs love but we made that commitment to him and assured him he would be just like new! LOL
Good luck and keep us posted!

i'm definitely ready to start working on her.. Thats half the fun, right?

..and I also definitely have zero mechanical experience, 3 but i'll be fine .   A group of my friends love to work on old  jeeps (cj5's and a M-138!)
and can't wait for me to get a bus!  and my mechanic use to own buses so hes gonna show me how to adjust points and do valve adjustments if needed.

i think with a little vdub love, Ill be just fine  In Love 2

my father just hipped me to the fact that the rings could be stuck from sitting and that i shouldn't start it.  he also thought the carb would have to be rebuilt
before its drivable. also new brakes , brake lines, and window seals. Does that sound about right?

My intentions are to keep the bus forever, so new brake lines , brakes , and seals are gonna be needed anyway.  my pops said i could remove the
plugs, liquid wrench it for a few days , change the oil and start her up to protect the rings.

oh..heres the ad for the bus , i wouldn't offer full price. its been on the samba for a while now and its kinda pricing for taking someones word that the engine and tranny work fine.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=510548

did that link up right?

if so  Thank You

never heard about the rings??? being stuck but always take your fathers advice..LOL

Have you asked for more detailed pictures like under, sides, any rust area's ,inside, wheel well area, any info on what's been done cause 3 grand for that is mighty steep! seeming how my bus penelope( shown on the left) had a rebuilt engine, carb, new electrical, ignition, condenser, dist. cap, ignition wire set, fuel oil and air filter, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, ball joints, shocks front and rear, new fuel line, battery, shift rod bushing, push rod tube seals and alignment and i got her for$ 3,700 bucks..... Try like 1,500 for that bus maybe 2,000 but no more! exspecially having sat for 10 years.....check it out cause some people have seen little miss sunshine to much and now think that their bus is like golden...

by the way both of mine are golden, just to point out...LOL

cool , thanks for the advice .   Thumbs Up! 1

..and hello penelope  39

your right, i just gotta wait for a good deal.  Unfortunitely there aren't any local bus clubs around here to mingle at.

im in no rush. and i honestly don't have the heart to tell my '94 mercury topaz (that smells like vomit)  that shes getting replaced anytime soon.

Plus side is we just got a bunch of work suddenly ! ( a two story addition and a garden center to build, yippee!) so i can start saving instead of spending again.

i live over in Western MA,  but i have access to a pick-up and a trailer so i can make it to any of the states around here within reason.

im heading to MAryland Nov 2nd for court,  might be a good opportunity for me to pick up something that isn't rusty. Plus it would make my court experience a heck of a lot groovier.

my advice -don't speed on the highways of Maryland during a t-party

.. well, actually i guess that doesn't apply for most of you  40

I used to live in Princeton Jct. NJ!  For 28 of my 34 years that is.  I'm in Knoxville now but if I was up there I would take a peek for you.

You're lucky to have all the help you mentioned.  I wish I had a few people around who could help me understand the VW language.

Bad Dog invites you to cruise with your air-cooled VW and raise a little $ for local spay/neuter programs! I own a plaza on Route 1, one mile north of Gillette Stadium, so it's convenient to both RI and Mass!
My hope is to gather, talk VW's, raflle a few things off, and then head to a local watering hole en masse and share some good eats and maybe a brew...

I am not available for many of the runs, so this is my attempt to get a regular gathering together and hang with my VW peeps.

The fun starts at 6pm...
Again, the last Friday of the month beginning in April.

Cool!  Willoughby has been on two ferry rides this summer. It was really hard for me to let a dock hand drive him. I was all like  eusa_pray 91 93

That bus on TS looks pretty good.  But not $3000 good.  Take a look at it and haggle.

I just got a similar bus to start after dropping a valve seat and then sitting for 3 years of Oregon rain.  All it took, once the busted head was swapped out, was an oil change, plug change, valve adjust, new coil, new fuel lines and new gas.  Don't need to worry about a carb rebuild, as it should be Fuel Injected.

Pour a little oil in the cylinders when you put the new plugs in, and give it a few cranks with the coil disconnected before actually trying to start it.  This will splash the oil around the cylinders, rings and pistons, and build up oil pressure before giving it the flogging of it's lifetime.
