My VW won't move! Brakes locked? Don't know what happened.
« on: September 20, 2010, 01:17:03 PM »
Hey everyone! I'm new to the VW world. I bought my 1971 VW in April and have been driving it daily for the last two months. Its been an awesome two months! I'm loving my VW.

I parked it the other night after getting home from work and it sat still for about 36 hours. This morning I went to take it for a spin and the brakes seem to have locked. It won't move. Its definitely not the hand brake as it is not that strong.

WHAT SHOULD I DO? PLS HELP.

Jack up each wheel and see which one is locked..... you'll more than likely have to back off the adjusters on that wheel to get the drum off....   :102:

Have you ever adjusted your brake shoes?  Look for brake fluid leaking out of one of the drums.... just incase a wheel cylinder piston popped out of socket and got lodged...  :102:

then plan on getting a Bentley Vw Service manual for the repair...  You must have this if you own a bus.... especially if you are new to them...  thumb1

try rocking it back and forth with the clutch.  Reverse-first-reverse-first.  That often does the trick.  If not, jack it up and give it a few whacks with a hammer.

I was going to tell him this but he said only 36 hours sitting .....  makes me think it's more mechanical...  :102:  Be nice if it's a easy whack or two for him...  thumb1

It's definitely not a good idea to park your bus for an extended period with the hand brake engaged.
I park 'Bessie' in the 'south 40' leaning to the right to prevent rain water from accumulating inside & the only problem is a little smoke from cylinders 1 & 2 when she's first cranked-up.
We used to encounter smoke from the inverted cylinders when cranking-up the R3350 engines on our B29s on Okinawa during the Korean War. (Normal behavior.)
