question about vw bus rear end
« on: June 14, 2010, 12:12:02 AM »
hi all new to this forum and hoping someone can lend me some of their knowledge i recently picked up what i was told was a 1971 vw bus automatic transmission but now from my searching i find out there was no automatic in 1971 so must be a newer year anyway my big question is what type of rear end did the vw buses that had automatic have? irs? or swing axle? or something way diff? i am in the process of building a vw powered trike and have to have a autotransmission that was reason for picking this 1 up but i have a 1600 with swing axle style suspension so being that im new to vws im hoping someone can tell me do i need to switch rear ends or can i just jam the axles i have into this auto trans?

 welcome

No,  the Bus Automatic is IRS......... you cannot use with a Swing axle setup...
