66 Double Cab won't roll
« on: October 10, 2009, 11:29:36 AM »
Hey everybody. I'm new here and new to VW buses. I had a 74 Super for a few years and recently obtained a 66 Double Cab.

I cannot seem to get it rolling. It has been sitting for a few years with the Ebrake on. I released the brake, tried to tow it, took the wheels off and tapped all of the drums with a hammer to try and break them loose and tried pumping the brakes. I haven't taken the drums apart yet. Is there anything else I should be looking for? What should be my plan of attack?

Thanks

Nick

Sounds like more trouble than you need.  I'll take it off your hands for you!!  :Drogar-Smile(LBG):

Check and make sure the cable actually relaxed when you let off the brake.  Common for them to seize up from rust.  Otherwise, PB Blaster, a hammer, and patience!
Where am I going, and why am I in this hand basket??

Maybe try rocking the bus back and forth too. Some front to back action might break the rust. Have you tried taking off the drum? If the brakes did release, the drum should come off fairly easy.

I'd get the engine running and see if 1st gear & reverse would break it loose before trying to pull the drums.
(Borrow a drum puller from AutoZone or Advance if you don't have one.)

It must have been tucked a way someplace cozy to not even move.  Post some pics!  :Drogar-Smile(LBG):
