1987 vanagon not shifting out of first (automatic)
« on: October 01, 2009, 10:39:00 AM »
Hello all,
My vanagon will not shift out of first gear when started cold.  After Driving for a bit it will finally shift.  It does not matter if it is running at high or low RPM.  It started doing this about 5 months ago but would only stay in first for a 1/4 mile or so and has since gotten much worse.  After driving a while, post shifting into 2 and 3, and getting to my destination, I can leave the vanagon for a while and as long as it is still warm when I get back in it the problem will not happen again, it will drive normal.

Anybody know the fix or had similar problems?

don't know too much about vannys - I don't know who has them here on this site. I know the full moon bus club members seem to have vanagons as the majority - there are some really good mechanics over there too, and they are nice too.(unlike some sites...coughsambacough) sorry....clearing my throat there.......
