Tightening up my steering?
« on: March 18, 2009, 07:58:29 PM »
I'm sure someone is familiar with tightening the steering from the box(77 Bus).  I know I need a stubby flathead and a wrench.  What I don't know is how do I adjust it to Tighten up the slack?  Do I need a partner to hold the wheel while I adjust or can I do this on my own?  Also do I hold the flathead still and tighten the nut?  I am so close to getting the steering 100% better than when I purchased this bus years ago!  Thanks for all the help!

If I remember correctly, the nut holds the screw in place and the screw is the actual adjustment.  You can play with it a bit, but remember that this doesn't take up slack.  It adjusts resistance at the wheel so it doesn't flop about on a straightaway.  I didn't know that either until I took it for a ride after making the "slack" magically go away by tightening my steering box.  Nope, just made it hard as crap to steer and did nothing for the actual flat spot.
