Steering Is No Longer Steering haha
« on: February 08, 2009, 06:20:14 PM »
Problem started when i was driving to fort leonard wood, mo.  The steering started getting really stiff when i would try turning.   I lubed all the lube points thinking that would fix it but it did not.   I was driving it yesterday coming back on base and  I heard a clink noise and I lost steering  to a certain point.   So there is like 360 degrees of slop before it starts turning any direction.  so i took the side plate off on the steering box.   When i did that the pin with the bearings came out.  the only thing i seen wrong was a few pits and there is a tooth on the end broke off.  so thats where i sit now.  the only thing i can think of is get a new box and hopefully that will solve all problems.  I really need it fixed by march 3rd because i will be driving it to my next training in mississippi then to california most likely.  so its a problem that needs resolved quick..   thanks for any help.   Joseph Riker

sounds like a steering box is in order. welcome
Do you have the Haynes manual and the green vw Bently manual? I would get my hands on them via an internet search asap. I'm sure you could rebuild the steering box if you can find the parts...to see all the seperate components makes alot of sense - maybe you can fix it yourself? I have yet to tear into one....

This is something else to check while your down there.  It's called the Drag Link.  My quarter turn of slop was reduced to but a couple of inches once the new one was in place.

Check the rag joint on the steering shaft. These are designed to fail in a way that still allows some steering when they break down and disintegrate there are nubs or cogs or pins whatever you want to call them that will still engage and steer. The stiff steering may have been the rubber of the rag joint binding and the clink may have been the nubs making contact. A lot cheaper than a steering box!
