change my 4 speed for a 5 speed
« on: February 01, 2009, 11:41:54 AM »
I have a 74 bay with the type 4 1800cc engine, westy conversion.  I am not happy with the play on the gearbox drive shafts or having 4 speed.  Has any one changed a 4sp, for a 5sp, box. I gather the change mechanism is different but can it be done.  Would expect to use a donor T25, what bits do I need ????

You truly do not want to do this, unless you are planning to spend several thousands of dollars on completely re-gearing the 5 speed so that your final gear on the 5 speed and 4 speed would be exactly the same. The reason is that the vw engines use rpms to spin the cooling fan and by doing so cool the engine. At highway speeds and stresses a reduced rpm would lead to higher head temperatures and eventual engine failure. It's just an all around bad idea.
