Vanagun wobble
« on: September 07, 2008, 07:06:29 PM »
 hey.
my 85 vanagon westy has developed a slow (below 30 mph)speed wobble.
it feels like it comes from the back of it.it is real noticeable when you let off the throttle.
so if any one has got ideas let me know.
thanks.
Shane

First thing to check is the wheel bearings. An easy way to do this is to jack up one side and place it on a jack stand. Next grab the wheel at 3 and 9 and push/pull in opposite directions. Then place hands at 12 and 6 and repeat. If there is movement in the wheel it is either the wheel bearings or the lugs.

I had a Rabbit that had a bad front wheel wobble that was corrected by tightening the lugs that were loose.

Hey.
i did that yesterday before i posted, plus some other stuff.
i live in a small town in Oregon,so theres not much open on Sundays.so today after work i went to the tire shop and had the tires checked.right front was seperated.big bulch on outside half.
the left rear was not running true.about a 1/3 of the tread was shifted to the inside.so 2 new tires and it rides and drives nice again.
oh,the left side front wheel bearing was a 1/8 of a turn loose.yes,i could tell tightning it made it better.
hey Gosta, are you still moving to orygon?
later.Shane.
