Looking into buying my first bus - advice??
« on: July 06, 2015, 08:33:46 AM »
Hey guys! I'm currently looking into buying my first VW bus. I'm looking at a '79 camper conversion bus for sale for $5k. It seems like it's in really good condition based on the pictures and description, but what else should I be looking for when I go to check it out? I have some experience with classic cars, but this will be not only my first bus, my the first VW I'm going to be buying and working on. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!  :p6:

Hello and welcome to the site!

Well if you've been into classic cars I don't need to talk too much about the rust hunt. The bus areas to check are front floor board, door to door. Side cargo door floor & battery tray.
79's have the bigger engine, type 4. I personally don't know a lot about them. I know that if you can check the end play, the amount the crank shaft will move forwards and backward helps to tell you how much life the engine may have left.
I'm a type 1 & 2 guy. (smaller engine)

Check out this page, lots of helpful info. http://www.ratwell.com/
