My healthy rust bucket is real happy at 70-75. I run with the big dawgs in the left lane, when traveling the interstate. Steering starts getting kinda light near 80.

Went from a 195/70-14 tire to a 225/75-15 tire (new rims too).  LOTS and LOTS better.  Cruising speed at RPM is definitely increased, as is ride and handling (6 ply).  Forgot to take the GPS so I couldn't check the speed.  I'll post up when I do.

Hey Zozo..... That's what i did on my '60....  I had 30x9.50 15 on the rear and a 215x70 15 front......  My rpms with GRB's was much better........ 70 mph was no problem..... I installed KYB gas shocks and a 1" swaybar up front so 18 wheelers and corners were much better also.... really was fun to drive...

I had to deflate the 30x9.50 15 tires to install them on the bus...... but figure the only reason to have to remove them i'll probably have a flat anyway... so it was no big deal....... road nice though... and fit nicely in the rear fender on stock '60 15" wheels... thumb1

Took it out on the road today with the GPS and found that I'm now running 68 MPH at 3500 RPMs.  Perfect.

Thats sounds nice!

Stock early bay with 002 trans and "proper" tires does about 3800-3850 @ that speed.

I can bring my bus up to about 70 but it feels like I'm pushing it. I'm not really sure though because I've never driven a manual trans before and I don't know what it's supposed to be like. Am I just being paranoid about my first bus or is this a legitimate concern?  ??? Also kind of scared of it over-heating  :s13:

Your speedo is probably a bit fast.  My old '69 claimed 80 @ 72 (confirmed w/ GPS).  In any event, as long as the ambient temperature isn't too high (like 80*+ outside), a 1600cc engine will do "70" according to the speedo all day.  I've sustained 75mph indicated speed for 12+ hours @ about 70* with minimal rest stops.  But they seem happiest between 55-65.

Is yours a dual port?  A '69 was singleport heads from the factory but many (mine included) were converted at some point.  Single ports don't like going over 60, so I've heard.  But that is just a function of "breathing" ability.  Never been behind the wheel of one on the hwy.

A healthy late model Bay with a type IV will run all day at 70 MPH. VW engines were designed to run all day at twice the RPM of modern cars. They reach max power at these RPM and the cooling fan is spinning at max efficiency. The fan makes a boat load of noise.

Nice Post Dj:Eep

I have a 72 bus with a Porsche 914 engine. I have not had the chance to use a GPS, but I had a friend follow me and I hit 90-95 mph.  :eusa_naughty: I will never do that again the engine was screaming and I had little to no control of the steering. I have taken a few road trips driving 500-600 mile a day only stopping for gas. 65mph speedo speed is the sweet spot I get the best gas mileage and ride comfort there. And it seems that very very few people mind having to pass. In fact many smile and wave.

we get excited when we reach 55 and top speed is 65 before things start to sound dangerous but what can ya say the ride is twice as fun in a vw who cares if it takes you an extra hour to get anywhere

So, driving sensibly, what sort of mileage should I be getting with my bus?  I just discovered a leak in the fuel line.  Which, i am going to fix when i log off from here.  Timing is good.  The Vac advance is working good (now). And, the valves are freshly adjusted. :041:  So, once I fix the fuel line and gas isn't leaking with every time I press in the clutch or hit a bump , what mileage should I be expecting from Daisy? :Drogar-Thinking(LBG):
