I'm having trouble with my new 1977 VW Campmobile. I just drove her from Ohio to georgia a little over a month ago.... I had no problems, just one blown fuse. Everything has been fine, except recently the battery dies after I let her sit three days. So I put on a trickle charge, went to fire her up and she tried but without success. I checked all the fuses, went around back and stuck my head in there, I could smell gas a little, so I don't think its the fuel pump. I took her out of park and rolled her back a couple feet and tried to start her up again. Nothing. Now I got to go back up North and I am not leaving without Lucy (her name) Oil just changed. Fluid Levels good. Is it the spark plugs? I only have a few hundred bucks for this so hopefully I'll use very little. Any suggestions. I'm new to VW buses, my first time ever being in one is when I bought this one. HELP!

Sounds like you may have a short somewhere which is draining the battery, also pull a plug lead off and hold it near (10mm) the engine then crank it and see if there is a spark. Try to check the possible problems in sequence. A multi meter would be really useful, basic ones are really cheap.

The battery is getting a good charge.... could be the problem though. I checked one spark plug so far.... it had a little spark and was a little corroded. I need more tools.

We need more info. Is this still fuel injected or has it been changed to carbs?
Is the bus turning over but not firing or is it doing nothing at all?

Check all of your vacuum hoses. If one of them has popped off it will cause a similar problem. If you have been messing with the battery cables it can be easy to knock one of them loose. Also check for cracks in the boots on the intake.

If you also think there may be a short then think where your wiring is or could rub against the bodywork or engine. Also look for loose connections, screwed and pushed together. Try turning it over in the dark as this may show sparks. Check the distributer as this can stick or seize or the vacuum advance could leak. Try to start the engine with the cap off and watch to see if the baseplate moves, it should. Good luck, where are you??

It sounds too me that the short and the non-start are most likely unrelated. Once we get it running again we will address the key off drain issue.

I agree. Its been raining and I'm sick, but I'll be on this asap. I took out some savings and ordered some parts I know could used replaced.... which included the sparl plugs and wires, and the distributor cap. Not to mention the shocks I so desperately needed. But I will let you know, and I have a feeling I will having her putting along tomorrow.

sounds a lot more positive. The ignition circuit and the starter use the same battery so if low cranking speed then there may not be enough left for a spark. Check it all through in sequence

VW FI needs about 10 volts to work.

I changed the spark plugs and wires as they were looking pretty rough and what the hell...... condenser points too. When I took out the condenser I saw my problem, the spinning tab thingy (Sorry for lack of technical term) was worn down, so the current was not being sent though the wires properly. The plugs and wires..... I feel better since I've replaced them, after the complete tune up I did..... Oil Air Belt Adjustment Timing. She sounds better than ever. Now I am going to replace the cv boots, and I don't think it is going to be fun. Thanks you all for your suggestions!
