Okay, short of removing the tank I'm wondering if I have an over flow hose problem?  Is there an overflow line on my tank.  76 Westy?  When I really try to top off the tank I have fuel running out of the left side into the engine compartment then on to the ground?  I have topped it only a couple of times like this.

left side as in standing looking at the engine from the back? that's probubly the fuel breather line that runs between the spare tire well and the outside skin of the bus. They are one of the first to deteriorate. There's a whole thread with diagrams and pics of the whole fuel system that shows all the spots where there is rubber fuel line bits connecting the hard lines. That big round plate on the inside right of your engine compartment is access to the huge  filler neck hose so you can check it for leaks. I just went thru all of mine since I had the engine out (much easier that way). I used new fuel line pieces and teeny-tiny hose clamps on each side of every connection.

Well crapatola!  If I weren't so lazy I would have looked before I asked. Doh!  Obviously this topic has been covered over and over.  Thanks Rasta for being patient and repling in a calm manner.  Again VW owners are more helpful than any other brand! Smiley

I'm glad I talked my son out of taking it this weekend camping.  I will be checking into this before moves anywhere.
Thanks
