Well, I got a new/used headlight dimmer relay. It is the kind that plugs into the bottom of the fuse box and is identical to my old relay. After I installed it, when I put on my right turn signal and apply the brakes, the turn signal flashes rapidly (like there is a bad bulb). I also have only brights (at least by the indicator) when I turn on the headlights. I have reinstalled the old dimmer relay and the same problem persist, except the brights indicator does not light up.

I pulled the fuse box back out and found a loose wire. It looks to be a replacement wire as it has a blue female spade connector on one end. This black wire comes off of the bottom of the third fuse from the right as you look at the face of the fusebox. This wire does not appear on the Bentley diagrams. It is also "coiled" like it was used as a jumper in the back of the fusebox.

Does anybody have a clue what is going on?

OK, update time already. I now have dim and bright headlights. Also, when the right turn signal comes on the brake warning light flashes. It does this dimly when headlights are off and brightly when they are on. Still don't know where the hell that damn wire goes.

I wish I could help on this, but I understand wiring like I understand molecular biology.  I did love how vdubyah3 explained electricity and how it prefers to be lazy over working.  I think his analogies will help me overcome my wiring phobia and to help me to delve deep into a wiring mess.

I'll look at my buses when the kids go down and see if I see any similarities.  It almost sounds familiar to when stripped the 74 and there was a stray wire coming from the bottom of the harness.

Are you sure the new relay has the same specs as the old? Is it the first one from the left under the fuse box? How many relays are actually supposed to be under there? All I have is a black (turn signal?) and silver (dimmer relay).

It sounds to me Gosta that clearly the brake light warning switch is connected incorrectly to the turn signal, or it is somehow getting a feed from the turn signal- perhaps a bad relay? or a wire crossed?

So hard to say Gosta, do you have a wiring schematic?

I've been pouring over the Bentley wiring schematic and the colored versions that are available on TS.

The turn signal relay is new. And I have switched the old, obviously defective, relay out with the new and vice versa to the same effect.

I think it has something to do with that loose wire, but I am not sure as to what.

Turned out to be a bad ground connection at the rear tail light. 

Cleaned up the connections and they work fine now.

Cool,  About 90 % of light problems is one of the grounds being loose or corroded........... Glad you found it...... It can get annoying when you can't...........
