Yup, same carb I have. I bought a kit and took it apart, replaced all the doohickies and cleaned out the varnish. It's on the carbs unlimited site.   http://www.carburetion.com/diags/3236DFAVDiaginfo.asp
Apparently DFEV and DFAV are the same.

Thanks for the link and schematic rastfoo. What kit did you get and do you know what the different kits entail? Should I take my carb apart first and determine what needs to be replaced before I order a kit?

I believe that carbs unlimited website has the kit I ordered - it has all the seals and bits to swap out with  the old ones. Poke around on that site and find 'Kits' for that carb. It helps to have it in hand before tearing into anything, I was careful to replace part for part and not take everything apart at once. They tell you what comes in the kit, I think the float itself is not included but sold seperately.
Here's what you want (3rd one down)
http://www.carburetion.com/Weber/weberparts.asp
I think I got the $19 one and it worked just fine. If I could take it to a carb shop I would - in fact a new carb may be in order, they just get worn out. I am getting 14 mpg, and I think the carb has alot to do with it. My 73 came with 2 Solex carbs from the factory - I'm thinking of switching back to that.

I tried taking the top off my carb today to have a look around but couldn't get the choke plates and rod through them to come out completely. But it looked like the float was moving freely from what I could see so I tried to fire her up again and it seems like that did the trick Bang Your Head. Must have just been stuck and needed a bump after 3 years.

I took her for a drive around the block, killed it twice, wasn't able to shift to second, but that is probably just my lack of ability to drive a stick very well. I'm a bit worried about the backfires though.

I'll start up a new thread when my next questions come up since they wont pertain to this subject area any longer.

Thanks all for the help! p6

Hey Busdriver,

How old is the gas in the bus............... did you drain the tank prior to putting new gas in?

You would be amazed at how many times old gas is the tuning culprit....... Makes 'em backfire.....not run right loss of power if you get it started to begin with...... Eek!  If there was any old gas sitting in the tank for more than 4 months it's junk.... if you put new gas on top of it remember ......it's still old fuel in the fuel lines by the engine.

It'll drive ya nuts cause you just know you put fresh gas in...........  I flush the tank and every line with new gas.....

Just a thought to your tuning problem... Thumbs Up! 1

......what he said. I also had backfiring problems which were immediately taken care of by setting the timing correctly and adjusting the valves. It's a game of fine tuning between all these things - you'll know when it 'clicks' and you're driving your bus and it runs smooth as butter......no feeling like it! Thumbs Up! 1 7 110
