I got a Hella dual battery kit from Bus Depot. The instructions say "please note, to ensure satisfactory charging, we recomend that no consumers should be connected to the auxiliry battery during charging". Just what does this mean? Nothing should be running as you drive down the road? If using that battery it would always be charging right?  I planed on running my cd/dvd player, interior lights, and sometimes a inverter (christmas lights) off this second battery. In the long run though, mostly just the interior lights while camping. So then are they saying? don't use things that use juice while driving as the battery will always be in the recharge mode ? 100 I'm missing something here. ?

I think what it is saying that if you run something that is 80 amps, your 70 amp alternator won't be able to keep up with charging two batteries. You probably won't be running the interior lights or anything off of the inverter while you are driving and unless you have a killer system your cd player shouldn't eat up too much.

I haven't had any experience with these things, but i would guess that you would be ok listening to some tunes. Eep, Vdub or Fastmc might be able to give you better advice

Hey landboat, sorry I didn't reply earlier. I also plan on useing a deep cycle battery that I robbed from my boat for my duel setup as I think that would work best. I took a pic of the instuctions for ya. If they don't work well enough you should at least be able to have Bus Depot send you a copy. If not, PM me with your address and I'll mail you them. Coarse you may have already done that by now Grin

Hey Oly,

What they mean is you don't want to have a heavy load pulling on the system when it's charging.....because the relay type dual battery system is limited to the amperage of the relay......... I think those kits are 50 amp relays......which really are big enough for any load you'll probably put on it.....

You can still run your christmas lights and stuff.........  Thumbs Up! 1

I installed a 90 amp Isolator kt from the local RV part suppliers..... charges both batteries and can handle about any load i'll put on to include my 110v inverter....  I use a 200 amp hour deep cycle battery to power all accessories to include TV/DVD, stereo, refridgerator, and the occassional microwave useage and my normal automotive battery for running the busses normal functions ........... Smiley

I would think you wouldn't want to constantly be charging the battery. You'll burn up the auxilliary with a constant charge.
That's why you should have a timer on it , or some kind of disconnect. You want to get to certain voltage which is usually a little lower in a deep cycle than a cranking battery.
You also want to discharge a deep cycle battery alot more than your cranking battery.
So, get it charged up , then use it down to about 12V before recharging, it'll last longer that way.

That's what the alternator w/regulator does.......It maintains the battery at a contant state of charge.............. Smiley .........  800,000 Rv'ers can't be wrong......  LOL

Isolators allow you to discharge only the deepcycle battery and not touch the cranking battery........  Thumbs Up! 1

From my thinking, the cranking battery needs higher voltage than the auxilliary . The alternator is regulated for the cranking battery not the auxilliary. That's why VW put a timer on their set-up. It gets the auxilliary up then cuts off.

I'll check in with Southern RV's and see what they say.
