To my knowledge only the main harness is sold for buses. That's all I've been able to find as well. However, if anyone knows anything different, let me know, I could seriously use that info too.

What wires are bad up front........? You could make your own one wire at a time........if needed...... Or just replace the bad ones..... not real hard...just take your time and follow the wiring schematic found below.......... http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/index.html I did some searching and only found the main harness also....... i guess they didn't want to recreate the birdnest for the lay person......

Exactly...We're doing a complete wriring job on a bus now and we're replacing wires one at a time. As fastmc25 stated...not hard, just take your time.

I kind of figured that's what I'm going to have to do. It's not that just one area is bad, it's just been messed with for 35 years and I was thinking of the "easy" way out and buy an entire harness with instructions but I guess I'll have to go wire by wire anyway thanks for your help.

[/quote] so what is exactly the "main harness"? just for the engine? I was just about to rip all my wires out from the dash too...I cut the ones that went to the engine, they were trashed anyway....

The main harness will be all the wires from the fuse box to the rear of the bus......... It should house the rear tail light wires, starter wires and the complete engine wiring harness...... It doesn't include all the wiring you see under your dash.............

A test light and a 6 volt lantern battery are your friend. disconnect the battery and hook up one terminal of the 6 volt to the problem curcuit. Say your brake lights don't work. Hook the positive post of the 6 volt to the wire that goes to the brake lite bulb and hook the negative to your test light. Then go probe around your master cylinder switches. Using the wiring diagrams you can determine which color wire should light your test light. Wiring isn't as hard as it's made out to be, it is just a tedious job. Remember electricity is like water. It flows downhill to negative or ground, it's lazy and would rather leak than do work, motors and devices are like a water wheel. they only use what they need and the rest returns to ground, or downhill after the work. Switches are valves, and relays are remotely operated valves. It takes time to sort out a messed up dash. And PATIENCE.

That's some good info vdubyah73. I will give that a shot. Has anyone replaced the main wireing harness? Everything I have read said it only include the wires from the fuse box to the motor. Does it include the tail light as well?

I have spliced a harness from a 76 into a 77. It was a fire victim rescue. A rotten 76 donated its harness to the less rotten 77. Did the splice under the bus, a little in front of the back of the slider. Gave me more room to work with the wires. The 77 had 1 extra wire, turned out to be part of the EGR test circuit for the old VW diagnostic plug in. The FI harness is a stand alone harness. The brain, airflow meter and the harness have to be either all for a 6 pin AFM or a 7 pin AFM . The change over was sometime in 76. 77 to 79 is mostly interchangeable. FED and CALI may be different.
All the stuff under the dash was slightly tampered with by previous owners. Most PO mods are usually done with the red and black wire and doesn't seem to run with original looms. When I have to go under a dash to figure out problems, I try to figure it with the least disturbance possible. If I can't figure it that way I start removing the stereo and switches, tracing where those wires go, removing them on the way. some odd problems can be caused by 4 way flasher switch, headlight switch, and the blinker relay. A dual filament bulb inserted backward can wreak havoc as well a bad grounds. I your trouble is with the lights check that all bulbs are in correctly and check all the brown wires at each light . Brown is ground and black is power with the key on.
