Hi,

US Trust is running an ad on TV these days that says something like, 'I've had lots of cars, (made millions, etc), but my favorite was a 1968 bus' and they show a 1972 or later VW bus. They don't say VW bus but that's what they show. A pale blue (maybe two tone?) VW bus, not a camper. You'd think they'd show a camper or a real hippie-mobile all painted up but they show a milquetoast blue pristine basic bus. I doubt anyone in 68 had any fun in a plain bus without jazzing it up somehow. (Maybe those people are the types that were serious, not having fun back then. They've made their millions and now can afford UST but are nostalgic for what could have been with that bus they had ...But, I digress.)

I had a 1970 camper. (I guess they are called type 2s (IIs) or other names too. I don't know them all.) Anyway, I noticed, when I had mine, that later models had the air vents squared off at the top around the 1972 model, maybe 1971 but that the 1970s all had the rounded air vent at the top. The UST ad clearly shows a squared off vent top so it can't be a 1968, right?

I wrote to UST but the mail bounced back. I'll write again once I get some ammunition from you guys, the experts.

What do you think?

Cheers,

John L

I just saw another ad for US Trust, in the 7/28 issue of  The New Yorker, that appears to have the correct bus listed, a 1972. So maybe they got enough mail from people who knew a '68 from a post-'70 bus.

Isn't it nice when those little wrongs are righted?

Cheers,
