Hello Folks

I spent the evening looking at tire information (here, samba, ratwell and others). Presently I am running 195/70 R14 Laredo's. This is my second set and they have served me well. Most of my travel has been road-based but next year's adventure will have a significant portion of off-highway travel. We are hoping to hop off Mexican #1  28 as much as possible in our time down in Baja Sur. I don't know if you have seen the adventure posted on www.vwvagabonds.com but in their 60,000 mile journey they used a set of 8.5"x27"x14" BF Goodrich A/T. (http://www.vwvagabonds.com/SuccessFailure.html) They had one flat as they travelled from SAmerican, Africa and India. I didn't see a lot of pavement on their website. These tires are advertised as having strong enough sidewalls for low pressure get out of sand etc. use.

The only other (very semi) aggressive trouble-free tread I can seem to find is the Michelin LTX AT. I could run a similar size to the Laredo's I am presently using. These I don't think are low pressure oriented at all.

There seems to be a 'dirth' of AT Tire talk. Anyone out there have some good links I could look at? Any advise? I know the BF's are a bigger tire and first gear will not have the same 'snap'. (195/70's are about 25.5" vs 27") The folks at vwvagabonds ran a 1600 mill, while I will have a new 2.0 still the gear ration/wheel/clutch will have some extra work to do.

The other factor is that my rims are 5.5" and the BF's have a minimum recommended requirment of 6". This will have them bulge a bit. I hear off-roaders do this on purpose and Rich at vwvagabonds used his 5.5's. Thoughts?

Looking forward to hearing from folks.

They are Michelin Agiles 81. They are on Hippopotabus, he's over on the samba. I'd PM him if you want more info.

Thanks. I'd be interested to see if he has had any experience in lowering the pressure on them. I have contacted Michelin to get their perspective. I have included a pic of the other end of the spectrum I am looking at.

The BF Goodrich AT is a good tire for dry off road surfaces.....work ok in sticky mud........... they are terrible if you hit water on the road at at speed..... Eek!...... no siping ability at all..... Hydroplaning is guaranteed...... other than that i like them.....  Thumbs Up! 1

I have used them on 2 different vehicles and same result....... a coworker of mine has them now   and has the same complaint........

I have alway liked the way they look though... Thumbs Up! 1

I don't think you have many choices in a 14" tire..............with the proper load range....   That's why i ended up going 15" but with major mods to fit them.....  Doh!

Best place to find comparisons on offroad tires or tires in general is www.tirerack.com  great tire search engine and selection....... Thumbs Up! 1

The tire Gosta showed you is a great all around tire for a bus........ the sidewalls are very firm so low air pressure use/benefit is questionable....... it still is offroad durable though....and will work well on the highway.... Thumbs up! 3

 Thumbs up! 3

Great feedback. Given that I live in a rainforest one should pay attention to the hydroplaning thang. Thanks. The tire web site was very helpful. One person said he goes as low as 18 pounds of pressure with the LTX's when in sand. I will post back what I get back in terms of low-pressure use of the LTX from Michelin.

Cheers
