Hi,
I have to replace some or all of the rubber seals of my 75 Bus.
Anybody have an idea where I can get good and inexpensive weatherstripping?
At the Bus Depot all window and door seals together is about $650.
Is there a place that sells whole sets for the whole bus?
Or can I get seals by the foot somewhere?

Price 'em out at West Coast Metric, Wolfsburg West, CIP1, EIS, etc. The problem is, there's only a few manufacturers, and all these different places buy from them. If your price of $650 is indeed for ALL of them, then that's pretty good, almost cheap even.
One thing to watch for is the cheap ones will "bleed" when you wash it, or touch it, or breathe, or look at it. By bleeding, I mean that when you wipe them, black comes off. It's the rubber oxidizing. The cheap ones are way worse than the good ones.
As a reference, ALL of them for my '65 ran me about $1300. It sucks, but they're good, and will most likely be on this earth longer than me.

What are the good ones then?
Only the OE (original) ones? Or others that were made in Germany? Are there any good replicas?

I got all my window/windshield rubber from Wolfsburg West. very happy with them - the windshield installers brought thier rubber - I swear it was 1/2 as thick as the german one (guess which one I made them put on.....yep,mine).
I've heard over and over again that there are some things you can skimp on and use mex or brazilian parts, but rubber is best to go with German OE stuff.

Agreed. Wolfsburg West or WestCoast Metric. They also stand behind what they sell. The only time I've had problems with the bleeding is when I went cheap for some tail light seals on a beetle, and when I bought some seals on Eb@y.

Thanks for all your info. I am pretty new, and have no clue what people have been arguing about for ever.
I found the chaeper rubbers were from BusDepot. But I didn't check for the origin yet.

If your from up north here (scandinavia/ northern europe) Then id skip imports and import taxes and order from Paruzzi http://www.paruzzi.eu/se/big/? A freind of mine a guy called Erwin runs the scandinavian shop- a real freindly helpfull and reliable guy- also the cheapest window seals available this side of the pond that are of a good quality. You can order in english and english links are available. |
