I took my bumper off, but three of the 8 bolts broke off leaving the threads in the bus. I tried drilling the first out, and it took the threaded area that the bolt went into out. So now that is one spot I cannot put a new bolt back in. It's one of the ones on the side for the step, so I am guessing it will be critical in keep the bumper from vibrating while driving, and strength in general.

Go ahead and drill them out.....If you do it carefully you may be able to run a tap in and cut new threads..... if not then you can have a new nutplate welded in........ Get the Fender mount nutplates for repairing bugs...

You can always try nutzerts as a last resort. If you are not familar with them, they are kinda like pop rivets with threads in the center. Not certain what size they go up to.

I forgot about those......... I have used those on the front of Clyde for the radiator mounts....... they work well.... the ones i have are 1/4"-20's......... they do make bigger ones....... I got mine at Harbor Freight.... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=1210 Pack of 100 Nut Rivets For use with the 45 Piece Threaded Insert Nut Riveter Kit Contains 25 each: 6-32, 8-32, 10-24, and 1/4-20

Actually the more i think about it..... I'd weld nutplates in instead......... for bumper bolts you want them as strong as they can be......... 1/4"-20 won't hold much over time and would probably shear off under light impact............ Just a thought....

Seriously though, a 5mph bumper is worthless anyways. But I agree with Fast. If you have a friend that wields or can hit up a shop for a quicky job then weld the plates. They will be stronger and better. If you have to get it back on the road immediately then go with the zerts.
BTW, I got my nut zert from Harbor Freight and used it to remount my front tire, which had stripped out at some point. I used the 1/4 in zerts and it has held up for over 8 thousand miles.

No hurry to get it on the road, actually the next two weeks I am off to help my wife recover from surgery and the bus will get lots of attention when I am not taking care of her.
