I got a 72 bus,I want to graft in a access hatch for the engine. I have a hatch already, but I need the surrounding metal so I can graft it in. Anyone do this yet and does anyone have the part I need?? I looked all over and can't find any yet. just to be clear..it is the top hatch, like a vanagon style,.. not the door by the bumper.

Go to the junk yard and find a squareback and cut the whole thing out, including surrounding metal.  That style is MUCH bigger than the old bus hatch and will afford much better access.  If you're gonna hack it, make it worth it.  Mine has a "hippy hole"  as they're called, and as much as I hate it being hacked, it damn sure makes it easier to work on.

for that matter - it would be awesome to have the gigantic access a vanagon has. Eek! I couldn't believe it the first time I laid eyes on one!

I was given the Idea of the squareback hatch. a few months ago when I thought of doing this...and I know of one  in a local junkyard..as a matter of fact..there is a 70 bus in there ,straight body, all windows and no rust. It is in great shape,I told the guy that it is in too good a shape to tear apart..He said .."That's what it's here for!! Dang..If I had the room...
