In December 1962, Heat "exchangers" were introduced. Air was heated for use in the cabin by passing air over heated compartments instead of directly passing air that has cooled the engine into the passenger compartment.

Im New here Hi everyone My name is Natalie I am from Australia and happy to say i own a 1976 baywindow pop top camper. At the moment it is completely striped and undergoing rust repairs. While i sit back and wait i am exploring all the different and exciting things i may be able to do to my kombi. My topic today is the bumper bars. As you may be aware the 76 bay window has the square bumpers. I am just wondering if i am able to swap these with an earlier model. The one i want is a 72 i think, they are the bars that wrap around with a step on either side, the low light kombi's have this type. Does anyone know if i can use these on my kombi hassel free? or will there be a little bit of mods? I've attached pictures. The first one is my kombi, thats the best shot i have of the front bar. The second one is the type of bar i'd like to have.
Cheers guys

Welcome Natalie.

I believe that you will need to switch the complete nose of the bus to do this. The late bays have a built in raised area behind the bumper.

The early bays don't have this.

So, in the end it may be cheaper to just find an early bay.

Aaaah, thanks mate! I totally didn't know there wasn't a raised section on the earlier models. I still have alot to learn about the kombi family! Ah wells i'll just stick to my original plan of chroming the original bumpers.
Thanks again!

No problem. The later bay bumpers are supposed to sustain less damage in a 5mph crash the early bays. So there may be a small plus side...But I, like you, like the early bay bumper style better.  Thumbs up! 7

I agree that the early one looks better and I am determined to move forward and attempt installing them on my 78 westy.  The early style might still fit over the later model molded nose metal.  I will let you know as mine comes together.  Likely the other post is correct but I just have to try.
