So last weekend I thought I'd pull the bumper off to get it ready to be chromed. Oh how hard could it be? No joke it took me about 3 hours!!! I'm serious! 2 bolts broke and had to have my husband husband get out the pneumatic gun for the other stubborn bolts! I guarantee this is the first time this bumper has EVER been off.
  Now for a question: what on earth is the point of the piece still hanging off of my bus (right)? As far as I'm concerned it was a pine needle collector  and a pain in the rump to clean when giving my bus a bath. The only reason it did not come off with the bumper was that it is hanging on to some pretty rusty metal and needs some delicate attention.

OK. 

I was all set to pull the engine back in November and all that was left was the bumper.  One bolt broke.  Those side thingys you speak of then needed to be removed because they had a death grip on the bumper.  It was like Betty would NOT let her bumper come off.

I see no need for the side plate thingys.  They collect dirt and only serve the purpose of "helping" to secure the bumper at it's ends.

They are no longer a part of Betty  .

That flat metal on the bumper ends is a splash pan............ since the corners of your bumpers are round..... Vw put those there to keep rocks and road debris from smacking the rear corner of the bus.......it hits the bottom and spins around the curve to hit the paint........     They do help secure the bumper too.....

And I just so happen to be missing the driver's side splash pan if either of you are looking to rid your garage of a small piece of steel   Besides, I don't have any pine needles here!

Thank you, thank you , thank you!!  So afraid no one would reply and I'd have to ask The Samba mobsters (they can be pretty brash on their replies sometimes)  I guess I better keep them.  Again thanks so much for answering my question, now I know!!!!!
